The Wonderfully complicated world of multi-cellular life
Now that we have evolved our yeast beyond single cell the replication process takes on new traits and with it new procedures. For example the medium will need to be cleaned once per week and the environment -i.e. breeding vessel changed bi-weekly. This is due to alcohol build up and to avoid mass cellular suicide - I'd like to keep this yeast for a long time!
Tonight another landmark was reached when the yeast sample was tested for the presence of starch. This was done to ascertain the cultures ability to digest complex sugars.
1g starch :10ml water solution
3 drops of iodine reagent added to test for starch:colour change indicates starch in solution this is our control sample.
10 mL yeast sample at 24C
3 drops (yes I know one drop went astray I was working fast !) No colour change! No starch present! Starch has been added to yeast and since sample was collected from bottom middle and top starch has been digested by yeast.
Microscope analysis tomorrow!
